RESOURCE PERSON Mr. AJAY GOVIND TOPIC: Attitude Management among Students
FOR: Juniors The workshop aimed at ‘how to deal with the changes occurring in the children.
Following points were discussed:- 1. The ‘change’ that occurs in a child leads to attitude which can be negative/ positive.
2. The teachers should make their students good listeners and convince them why certain rules should be followed rather than imposing them.
3. In situations when children turn rude and fail to listen, the teacher must not get provoked but talk to the child in a subtle manner to make the child realize that rude behavior won’t work.
4. In order to ‘earn’ respect, the teacher must take care of the self-esteem of the child.
Above all, the key lies in dealing with the change and not the ATTITUDE.

ORIENTATION PROGRAMME (KG-IX) |
|
Orientation programmes were organised for parents of students on the day of Result declaration from 18th March to 31st March 2011.
The orientation programmes were geared to help parents guide their wards and make them better human beings.
Parents were told about the importance of discipline; the education system and methodology followed and their role in their wards lives. Specific problems like sleeping and eating habits, lying, defiance were discussed by the school counselor. Tips on how they could improve their ward’s spoken and written English were also given.
Each session was addressed by Respected Principal madam; the education head, Naina Ved madam; Head mistress Seema Ray madam; the school counselor, Saroj Sharma madam and the English teacher Ms. Rajshree Vaidya.
The Parent-Teacher Association extended its support and the presence of the members of the Executive Council at the venue also indeed heartening.
At the outset parents were urged to become role models themselves. English, for all of us, is a foreign language. Hence, learning to speak, read and write it well requires extra efforts.
Parents of the Pre-Primary Section were urged to concentrate on developing their ward’s listening and speaking skills. The best way to do this was by surrounding the child with English.
Parents were asked to share books with their wards – read aloud to them everyday.
This reading aloud helps the child associate sounds with wards. Reading stories, singing rhymes and songs, watching cartoons are all pleasure-giving activities which could be turned into learning experiences.
Parents were asked to be careful with pronunciation as faulty pronunciation was usually the root cause of spelling errors.
A separate book reading time would help the child form a routine. Parents were asked to let the child choose books and introduce only one new book at a time.
Speaking the language at every possible opportunity goes a long way towards acquiring confidence and fluency. Parents were requested to speak English themselves and encourage their children to do so too.
At the Primary School Level, the student is ready to learn two more skills i.e reading and writing. By now, the child is able to read himself, though he requires help and encouragement.
The student should be urged to read aloud, not skip or ignore unfamiliar words and re-read for reinforcement. The dictionary should be used for word meanings and usage and the thesaurus for a rich vocabulary.
Word-games like scrabble, what’s the good word, a word antakshri would make learning enjoyable and effortless.
Listening to one NEWS segment everyday, watching English movies will help improve listening and speaking skills. Adequate attention should be paid to correct pronunciation and spellings. Grammar is the backbone of any language. Regular practice is all that is required.
Writing skills demand clarity of thought, rich vocabulary and imagination. Stress must be laid on correct spellings, proper punctuation, correct formation of letters, neatness and good presentation.
The Middle and High School classes demand more in terms of writing kills. By this time, the student is comfortable hearing, reading and speaking English. He now needs to hone his writing skills.
At this stage a limited vocabulary is a major stumbling block. Students do not know synonyms, antonyms, idioms, phrases, proverbs, similes. All these make the language beautiful.
There are two ways to acquire a rich vocabulary. One is to study words systematically. This requires a lot of grit and perseverance. A majority of the students lack these qualities. The second way is easier for it also gives pleasure. One must read voraciously. Read the newspaper, articles in good magazines, bestsellers, literary prize-winning books. ‘Read and succeed’ – that is the best way.
This is the stage when children start using slang, SMS abbreviations and even vulgar language. Parents were asked to be very vigilant and strongly disapprove and discourage this.
Language - a unique gift given by God only to man. It is in our hands to hone our skills, gain mastery – read, hear, speak and write rich and beautiful English.
The tips given were simple, immensely workable and it was hoped that these will help parents guide their wards become fluent in English.
